'Topping out' ceremony marks new phase in the development of Saϊd Business School at the University of Oxford

A topping out ceremony has been held at Saϊd Business School to mark the completion of the superstructure for an extension to the School. Mr Wafic Saϊd poured the last piece of concrete to complete the first stage of building work.

The new building has been designed by leading architects Dixon Jones, who created the School's critically acclaimed original building, and it will provide additional facilities for an expansion of its teaching and executive education activities. Located on the car park and part of the gardens of the current site, it will include three Harvard-style lecture theatres, seminar rooms and social space, including a bar, restaurant and roof terrace. It is anticipated that the new building will be completed in summer 2012.

The ceremony was attended by friends of the School, including members of the School's Board, Oxford University Heads of Division, and benefactors. Mr Saϊd commented: 'This Phase II building represents a new and exciting stage in the School's development, one which provides not only for growth but which also brings the School's degree and executive education programmes much more closely together for the benefit of both, from students embarking on their first degrees to CEOs seeking to understand the broader context for their work.'

Strategic Development Fund

Two recent grants to encourage entrepreneurship have been made from the Strategic Development Fund for which the Said Foundation provides annual funding of £1m. One supports the expansion of an annual international business plan competition for young entrepreneurs which involves Said Business School MBA students mentoring short listed teams from six continents. MBAs play a critical role in helping teams to develop their ideas into rigorous business plans, defending their teams’ proposal in the final stages of the competition, and continuing to support their teams in the development of the business after the competition has ended. The other grant will help the School to explore the establishment of a seed investment fund to support business ideas from current SBS/Oxford University students. Both grants are intended to enhance the School’s already widely acknowledged expertise in supporting students’ ambitions to become entrepreneurs.

Scholarships

The Foundation’s Chairman recently met with some of the SBS doctoral students who are supported through the Strategic Development Fund. Grants from the Foundation enabling the School to provide full funding for doctoral students have helped SBS to attract the brightest and the best and to compete on a level playing field with other top schools who also offer such funding. By the 2011/12 year, the Foundation will have supported 15 doctoral students at SBS. It has also agreed to provide funding for students entering in 2012/13.
